Snake safety

Once the weather starts to warm up, snakes come out of their Winter hibernation and are much more active as they head out and about searching for food. One thing we need to be aware of in WA is that many snakes are protected species and it is illegal to kill them.  Snakes play an integral part in our wildlife ecosystem and destroying them can upset the natural balance. That being said, none of us wants to encounter a snake or worse, get bitten.

There are many precautions you can take to ensure you and your family stay safe. Here are our top tips:

  • Remember to be aware and alert when you are walking in busy or long grass.
  • Always wear long trousers and boots or enclosed footwear that protect your legs, ankles and feet.
  • Stick to cleared paths and tracks when walking or cycling and be aware of the ground and your surroundings.
  • Clear long grass from around your home and eliminate any hiding places. This includes items or rubbish left lying on the ground.
  • Reduce mice around your home.

Remember if you find a snake, do not approach or aggravate it in any way. Do not try and handle or remove it yourself. Many bites occur when people try to deal with a snake themselves.

If you find a snake around your home or property that needs removing, contact Wildcare Helpline on (08) 9474 9055 and they will refer you to a volunteer who will assist in the snake’s removal.
